Valentina Vassilyeva who lived from 1707 to 1782, was a peasant from Shuya, Russia. According to the records of the Monastery of Nikolsk on February 27, 1782, this woman gave birth to four sets of quadruplets, seven sets of triplets, and sixteen sets of twins with the same man her husband Feodor Vassilyev.
According to records out of 69 children only two of the children failed to survive their infancy. However, Feodor Vassilyev married again and with his new wife, and they had two sets of triplets and six sets of twins for a total of 18 more children in 8 births, making him a father of 87 children.
Guinness World Records lists Vassilyev’s wife, with her 69 children, to be the official record holder as the most prolific mother of all time.
A photo purportedly showing Valentina Vassilyeva and her 69 children has been circulating on the Internet for years:
However, Vassilyeva is not the woman pictured in the viral photo displayed above. This image, which appeared in an article about polygamy published in the Utah Historical Quarterly, actually shows Joseph F. Smith, the 6th President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, posing with his multiple wives and children in 1904.
